PATTEE CANYON FOLF COURSE TO OPEN JULY 1
|
Forest Service News Release
MISSOULA, MONTANA June 25, 2008: The Pattee Canyon folf (frisbee golf) course will open for the season on July 1, following a seven-month closure to protect the groomed wintertime Nordic ski trails and provide the course some much needed rest. Acting Missoula District Ranger Tom Rhode said today that the past year round use was very hard on the soil and vegetation on the course. “These resources have shown a lot of improvement since we implemented the rest period,” Rhode said. Earlier this month, the Forest Service did some restoration work in cooperation with the Montana Conservation Corps and members of the local folfing community. “Our goad was to speed up the recovery a bit,” Rhode said. “We realigned two holes (#6 and #7), fenced off a damaged area, constructed a new trail for folfers and reseeded trampled ground.” Rhode added that, although there has been some minor vandalism at the restoration site, the grass seed is starting to grow. The length of the folf season this summer will depend on the weather and how folfers treat the course. Missoula District Resource Staff Officer Andy Kulla inspected the course on Wednesday and found there was still standing water and soft soil on some of the fairways, but expects the hot dry weather in the forecast to help dry things out. “Unfortunately, I followed a trail of discarded beer cans on the course. We’re asking folfers to please pack out their litter and any other garbage they find as they enjoy the course this summer and respect the restoration work we did this spring.” said Kulla. According to Rhode, the Garden City Flyers hope to install rubber Tee pads and baskets this summer to further reduce impacts at the course. “We’re trying to determine the capacity of the resouce to withstand this kind of concentrated use. We hope that a combination of rest, allowing the vegetation to re-establish and the soil to dry out before opening the course each year, maintaining a Forest Service presence in the area, and realignment of holes and structural improvements can be used to protect the land,” he said. “Protecting the resources while providing a quality experience for folfers, picnickers and other visitors will help to ensure a sustainable folf course in Pattee Canyon,” Rhode added.
